Role of Surface-Anchored Polymer Chains on the Adhesion of an Elastomer

چکیده
We study the adhesion between an elastomer of cross-link index, P, and a flat solid surface where polymer chains of polymerisation index, N, have been end-grafted. To understand the adhesive feature of such a system, one has to study both the origin of the grafted layer interdigitation with the network and the end-grafted chain extraction out of the elastomer when it separates from the solid surface. Both aspects are addressed here. We develop an analytical model that allows one to predict a critical surface grafting density, r ’ P=N , beyond which only the thermal fluctuations allow the layer to interdigitate with the elastomer. A review of the possible mechanisms of chain extraction is proposed.

Interdigitation between surface-anchored polymer chains and an elastomer : consequences for adhesion promotion
We study the adhesion between a cross-linked elastomer and a flat solid surface where polymer chains have been end-grafted. To understand the adhesive feature of such a system, one has to study both the origin of the grafted layer interdigitation with the network, and the endgrafted chains extraction out of the elastomer when it comes unstuck from the solid surface. We shall tackle here the fir...
متن کاملSliding friction between an elastomer network and a grafted polymer layer: the role of cooperative effects
We study the friction between a flat solid surface where polymer chains have been end-grafted and a cross-linked elastomer at low sliding velocity. The contribution of isolated grafted chains’ penetration in the sliding elastomer has been early identified as a weakly velocity dependent pull-out force. Recent experiments have shown that the interactions between the grafted chains at high graftin...

Polymer-coated surfaces are routinely used in industrially important applications including prevention of biofouling (in fabrication of protein-resistant surfaces), improving stability of colloidal dispersions, surface lubrication, or enhancing wettability and adhesion. Polymer chains chemically bound to the surface represent a special class of polymer coatings that has gained considerable atte...
متن کاملStaphylococcus epidermidis adhesion on modified urea/urethane elastomers.
Block urea/urethane co-polymer films present elastomeric properties with the possible tuning of their surface properties within a wide range and are therefore considered relevant surfaces for possible medical applications. In particular, thin free standing films of urea/urethane elastomers with two soft segments, polypropylene oxide and more hydrophobic polybutadiene, develop multistable states...
متن کاملEffect of nanoconfinement on polymer dynamics: surface layers and interphases.
We present neutron spin echo experiments that address the much debated topic of dynamic phenomena in polymer melts that are induced by interacting with a confining surface. We find an anchored surface layer that internally is highly mobile and not glassy as heavily promoted in the literature. The polymer dynamics in confinement is, rather, determined by two phases, one fully equal to the bulk p...
